EMDR

I am trained and certified in S.A.F.E. EMDR, which stands for Somatic and Attachment Focused Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This is an entire approach to overall treatment, not just a technique using eye-movements. This, along with some other integrated methods, will be the primary framework I use with you. (How is this different from traditional EMDR?)

Why?

Trauma interferes with our brain’s processing. EMDR is based on the theory that our brains interpret and store memories incorrectly during a traumatic event. EMDR accesses the memory network, disrupting the disturbing memory, causing the memory to reprocess in the correct way. This naturally leads to resolution and transformation.

(adapted from S.A.F.E. Approach to EMDR Therapy by Deborah Kennard, MS)

How?

One of the things I like about EMDR is that it does not require you to verbally retell the entire trauma event in order to work effectively. This gives you the ability to decide how much detail about a specific event you wish to share with me. We will be more focused on your internal and physical experience during the reprocessing stage. When we start working together, I will help you have a better understanding of what EMDR is and how it can be useful for you, specifically.

Please note that I see adult (18+) individuals only and do not provide therapy for couples or families.
